moxibustion

The healing properties of moxibustion warm and nourish acupuncture points & channels by expelling cold.

Moxibustion is a warming therapy that applies a particular dried herb, mugwort or artemisia vulgaris, close to or on the body at chosen acupuncture points or areas.

By expelling cold, it promotes the movement of Qi and Blood, and eliminates stagnation.

how it works

The concept behind this therapy is to remove and expel cold from the body, which can cause discomfort, pain and inhibit the body’s normal functioning.

Cold constricts the free flow and movement of blood and fluid in the body, thereby moxibustion treatments will release constriction, while enhancing healing to regulate normal body movement.

the 3 types of moxibustion I use

  • Mugwort comes in a variety of formats for needle application.
It can be loose and then shaped into a ‘cone’ and placed on top of the needle or it can come in a prepackaged roll that is placed on the end of the needle and ignited.

Either way of application, it provides a gentle warmth to the needle, acupuncture point and surrounding tissue.

  • This is a pure moxibustion that is shaped into the size of a ‘rice grain’ or formed into a larger cone and placed onto the skin, with a barrier cream between the skin and the moxibustion.

The barrier can either be a suitable balm or salt and ginger.

  • This is the most common type of moxibustion and is presented as a compressed mugwort in a roll with a paper covering (smoking type) or as a black charcoal stick (non-smoking type).

The end of the roll or stick is lit and hovered approximately 1-2in above the skin over acupuncture points or an area of coldness on the body.
